Recovering For Birmingham Consumers Harmed By Defective Drugs Or Medical Devices

Over-the-counter medication, medical devices and other health care products get produced and placed in the market for consumers to purchase and use. Many of these products are extremely useful, relieve common ailments and enhance our quality of life. Some are even life-saving.

But others are found to be hazardous. Either because they were designed poorly, manufactured poorly or simply created without adequate warning instructions for the user.

Fortunately, those who are injured by hazardous drugs or medical devices may have a right to pursue compensation against the manufacture or seller of the product. This is commonly known as product liability.

Today’s Dangerous Medical Products

Allergan Breast Implants

Various breast implants manufactured by Allergan were recalled in 2019 after several hundred cases of lymphoma were attributed to the implant. Although the company has since pulled the implants from market, individuals who have received such implants may have a cause of action.

Hernia Mesh Implants

The Ethicon Physiomesh Flexible Composite Mesh and the Atrium C-Qur Mesh were produced and used to repair hernias. However, many patients who received these mesh implants have suffered bowel blockage, infections, severe pain and other complications.

ParaGard Birth Control IUDs

An IUD made from copper wire manufactured by ParaGard has been known to break without warning, causing lacerations and scarring in the female body. Some women have suffered injuries in severity that has resulted in the need for a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus).

Valsartan Heart Drug

Valsartan is a prescription drug used to treat hypertension and other heart conditions. But certain amounts of NDMA, an ingredient considered cancerous, has been detected in the drug.

Zostavax Shingles Vaccine

Zostavax, manufactured my Merck, is a vaccine used to prevent shingles in older individuals. However, the vaccine has been shown to actually increase the risk of a shingles outbreak. Many plaintiffs have filed suit against the manufacturer for various injuries. As of 2019, the suit is still pending.

Zantac Heartburn Medication

In 2019, Zantac, a medication used to treat heartburn, was found to contain low levels of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a cancer-causing ingredient. A class action has been formed involving  hundreds of thousands of plaintiffs across the country and is currently still pending.
