Bayer Healthcare has recently announced that it will halt the sale of Essure at the end of this year. Studies have shown that Essure can allow pregnancy and cause abdominal pain, bleeding, vaginal infection and, in severe cases, death.
The Washington Post recently reported that “In recent years, thousands of women have reported complications including autoimmune problems, unintended pregnancies and the migration of the coils into the pelvis or abdomen. Many said the problems were so severe that they had the devices surgically removed. Bayer has been served with lawsuits representing more than 16,000 patients, the company said earlier this year.”
The device had been pulled in every country across the world but the United States prior to this year, and Bayer announced that it will officially pull Essure from the market on December 31 of this year for “commercial reasons.” It is estimated that 750,000 of these devices have been sold since its inception in 2002, primarily in the United States. The most common patient problems stemming from complications with Essurehave been abdominal pain from the perforation of the uterus and fallopian tubes, menstruation irregularities, headache, fatigue, and weight fluctuations.
Symptoms of a reaction include rash, itching, and hives. Other common complications include:
- Device Breakage
- Movement/Migration of the Device
- Abdominal Pain
- Heavier/Irregular Menstruation
- Weight Change
Thousands of claims have been filed against Bayer and Conceptus Inc. by women who suffered severe abdominal damage when their Essurebirth control device moved and punctured the uterus and fallopian tubes.
