Montgomery & Ponder, LLC Attorneys Investigating PPI Claims

Patients across the nation have filed lawsuits against the makers of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid. However, that’s only a fraction of the at least 5,000 PPI kidney disease cases being investigated.

Numerous reputable studies have shown that the risk of chronic kidney disease or chronic renal failure increased by up to 50% as a result of taking PPIs. Another study presented at the American Society of Nephrology meeting in 2015 shared similar outcomes and indicated that the longer that the patient was taking medication, the higher the risk. These results followed a previous study which indicated that patients taking PPI medications could have up to a 21% higher risk for heart attack or myocardial infarction. These research studies are linked to others that have connected PPI usage to adverse events like bone fractures and hypomagnesemia. PPIs may also be linked to acquired infections, birth defects and acute kidney infections. A new German study in 2016 identified that those patients at least aged 75 who tooks PPIs like Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid had a 44 percent higher risk of developing dementia. It is important to note that most popular heart burn medications, such as Prilosec, Prevacid, and Nexium, are PPIs .

The most common injuries injuries claimed in these lawsuits are:

  • kidney injuries including chronic kidney disease (CKD)
  • acute interstitial nephritis (AIN)
  • end-stage renal disease
  • kidney failure

  • Laryngopharyngeal reflux or extraesophageal reflux disease
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis, an allergic condition in which the esophagus becomes inflamed
  • Peptic ulcer disease
  • Gastrinoma, a tumor located in the pancreas or duodenum that creates an excess of the hormone gastrin and can cause ulcers
  • Zollinger–Ellison syndrome, in which tumors in the stomach cause the body to produce too much acid, resulting in peptic ulcers
