The attorneys at Montgomery & Ponder, LLCr are investigating claims related to kidney damage caused by drugs containing proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, and Protonix are common drugs that contain PPIs. A federal panel, known as the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML), recently consolidated more than 160 lawsuits from around the nation into a multidistrict litigation (MDL). The cases were transferred to the US District Court of New Jersey for consolidated pre-trial proceedings.
Long-term use of PPI medications may cause problems with the body’s ability to absorb calcium, magnesium, and other vital nutrients. Patients who take the drugs for over a year are at risk of suffering serious injuries. The lawsuits claim the PPI drug manufactures were aware of the risk of kidney disease and failure associated with PPIs, but continued to market the drugs without warning patients and their doctors.
The most common injuries injuries claimed in these lawsuits are:
- kidney injuries including chronic kidney disease (CKD)
- acute interstitial nephritis (AIN)
- end-stage renal disease
- kidney failure
